Yoga and Nutrition

Yoga philosophy includes guidelines for eating that support practice. Understanding these principles helps integrate both for optimal benefit.

Ahimsa - Non-Violence

This extends to food choices. Many practitioners eventually shift toward plant-based eating - compassionate to animals and often to their own bodies.

When to Eat

Yoga traditionally recommends not eating 2-3 hours before practice. Heavy meals interfere with movement and breathing. Smaller, lighter meals support practice.

What to Eat

Sattvic foods - fresh, natural, plant-based - are considered purest. These include fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes. Processed foods, meat, and excessive spices create tamas - dullness.

Mindful Eating

Yoga's mindfulness extends to eating. Notice flavors, textures, sensations. Eating slowly, without distraction, improves digestion and satisfaction.

Not Rigid

These are guidelines, not rules. Extremes defeat yoga's balance. Occasional indulgence is fine. The principle is awareness, not restriction.
